Norfolk Portsmouth Newport News, VA, October 29, 2026 —
Local election officials in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville and Martinsville said they expect Election Day to proceed smoothly, despite discussion and concern about possible federal monitors or interference at polling places.
The federal Justice Department plans to send monitors to some localities in Virginia. However, registrars in the four Southwest and Southside communities said they had not received requests related to monitors and were not anticipating disruptions, according to the information provided.
The officials’ confidence reflects their expectations for the election in their areas. The available information does not identify the registrars who made the statements or provide further details about the concerns surrounding potential interference.
It also does not specify which Virginia localities the Justice Department plans to monitor, how many monitors may be deployed, or when any monitoring would take place. No election date, details about polling-place operations, or account of any specific incident was provided.
As a result, the information establishes a distinction between the Justice Department’s broader plan to send monitors to some Virginia localities and the status reported by registrars in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville and Martinsville: those registrars said they had received no such requests and did not expect disruptions. It does not establish whether other localities have received requests or provide additional details about the department’s plans.
